7 Surprising Causes of Dry Skin

If you are experiencing skin dryness, the first step to treating it is to know what is causing it. Here are some common reasons the skin can lose moisture, along with some tips on how our ChitoCare beauty Hand Cream and Body Lotion can help keep your skin hydrated and looking healthy and soft.

Just like we need water, our skin too needs moisture and at ChitoCare beauty we know this all too well. Every skin type is different. Our skin is as unique as our character, so knowing what your skin needs, and how it can suffer, is important. If you experience dry skin, you know it can be unpleasant. Itchiness, flaking, soreness and a rough texture are all signs of dry skin in need of a moisture boost. Finding the cause of dry skin is crucial in knowing how to best care for it.

Frequent Washing

Of course washing hands is important to remove bacteria, germs, dirt and grime. It can be tempting to think that washing our hands means we are "hydrating" our skin with water, but that isn't actually true. Repeated hand-washing strips the skin of its natural oils, which in turn leads to dry, rough or cracked skin. This is why it is important to moisturize your skin, so as to lock in hydration.

Tip: Use lukewarm water and pat or blot your hands dry instead of rubbing them, as this can lead to micro-abrasions. Wear protective gloves when washing the dishes, gardening or doing other activities that require repeated handwashing. Lather up with ChitoCare beauty Hand Cream after washing your hands, and every night before you go to bed when your body goes into “repair mode”.

Harsh Soaps & Cleansers

Most soap bars, shampoos and cleansers contain detergents that can deplete our skin of necessary oils. This can cause dryness and flakiness, on our hands, feet, face skin and scalp. It is important to choose body washes, face cleansers, hand soaps and shampoos that do not dry out the skin.

Tip: Choose products that contain a moisturizer or natural oils that can hydrate and nourish your skin. ChitoCare beauty Face Cream skin care products contain coconut oil, macadamia seed oil and aloe vera leaf juice powder that effectively protect your skin and help to maintain skin moisture.

Long Hot Showers & Baths

A relaxing hot bath or a nice long shower can be great ways to unwind after a long day, especially in the winter. Soaking in a hot tub sounds even better! However, hot water causes skin to lose moisture, leading to itchiness and irritation.

Tip: Try to limit your showers to 5 to 10 minutes and always apply body lotion or cream after a hot bath or shower. Moisturizers work best when on damp skin, so apply within a few minutes of patting yourself down. ChitoCare beauty Body Lotion protects the skin by forming a film that locks in moisture while reducing redness and itching. ChitoCare beauty Serum Mask is ideal for both your face and body, as it can be dissolved in warm bath water after being used on your face, giving you a hydration boost and dewy look all over.

Aging

The older we get, the more susceptible we are to dryness. As the skin produces less oil, it dries up faster, especially in areas such as the arms, hands, feet and lower legs. For women during menopause, it can be extra important to replenish lost moisture. This will also help with skin elasticity and suppleness.

Tip: Apply lotion to the affected areas twice a day or when needed. ChitoCare beauty Body Lotion is suitable for all skin types and forms a protective film, locking in moisture. For your face, chose a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid, glycerine, chitosan or other nutrients that help retain moisture and repair the skin barrier. ChitoCare beauty Anti-Aging Repair Serum acts as a powerful moisturizer with antioxidant action, reducing the appearance of fine lines and increasing hydration.

Winter Weather & Dry Air

When the cold weather sets in, along comes the rain, the wind and the snow. Temperature and humidity levels drop, leading to drier atmospheric air. This means that skin moisture evaporates quicker while dryness sets in faster. The same applies to dry air indoors, due to air conditioning or heating.

Tip: Cover up in the cold to protect your skin from the harsh wind and cold. Apply a moisturizing cream or lotion to your hands and face before heading out. ChitoCare beauty Face Cream can be used both day and night and will protect and nourish your sensitive face skin from aggressive factors, while ChitoCare beauty Hand Cream will provide powerful moisture for your hands year-round.

Medical Conditions or Medication

Some medical conditions, such as psoriasis, contact dermititis or eczema, can make your skin sensitive and prone to dryness, itching, soreness, redness, cracking, even bacterial infections and scaly patches. Accordingly, sometimes skin dryness can be a side-effect of medication taken for conditions such as diabetes, kidney failure, hypothyroidism, high cholesterol and skin cancer.

Tip: If you haven‘t already been diagnosed, these might be signs that you should visit a dermatologist, who can assign you the right kind of treatment or medication. Dryness, itching, soreness and redness can be reduced with ChitoCare medical Healing Spray. It can be applied to intact or breached skin to soothe symptoms and provide relief, while protecting the skin from external factors and promoting natural skin healing.

Sun Exposure

When we are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays without protection, these rays can badly damage and even kill skin cells. This can lead to dryness, pigmentation, wrinkles and freckles – in severe cases it can lead to skin cancer. When the outermost layer of the skin is damaged, it becomes thicker, losing moisture, elasticity and smoothness. UV rays are present all year round, even in the winter and on cloudy days. If you enjoy winter sports, it is also important to protect your skin, as snow reflects sun rays, compounding the issue.

Tip: Prevention. One of the most important ways of protecting your skin from sun damage is to avoid spending time in the sun without protection. Covering up your skin, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours (between 10am and 4pm, when UV rays are at their strongest) and wearing sunscreen every day are easy ways to stay protected. It is important to wear sunscreen with at least a SPF of 15, but preferable 30 or higher, every day. To keep your skin looking radiant and youthful, apply ChitoCare beauty Face Cream every morning, as it contains SPF 15 and protects the skin from dehydration by forming a defensive film.

By being mindful about these potential skin irritants and dehydrators, you can work your way towards healthy, glowing skin. For an intense moisture boost, ChitoCare beauty has formulated a 30-Day Anti-Aging Repair Treatment – featuring a moisture bomb Serum Mask for face and body, a powerfully hydrating Anti-Aging Repair Serum, a protective Face Cream for day and night, and a nourishing dietary supplement for Hair, Skin & Nails.
