The Rare and Refined Potential of Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract
If Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract sounds like a polar superhero with magical powers, that’s because, in a way, it is. This multifunctional ingredient is sourced from glaciers in polar regions and is used in our ChitoCare beauty Face Cream and Hand Cream for its water-binding and anti-aging properties. Read on to find out what this glacial microorganism can do for your skin.
What is Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract?
Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract (PFE for short) is a resident often found in the frozen deep-sea waters of the Antarctic. It is a genus of gram-negative marine bacteria and exists as different species. It is often sourced from the island of King George, a remote and rugged island 120 km (about 74.56 mi) off the coast of Antarctica but can be found elsewhere too. And much like chitosan, it has amazing qualities!
The bacteria strain was first discovered in 1988, when it was found in mud samples collected from the bottom of a glacier! While studying the bacterium, researchers found that, by using the process of biofermentation, it could produce something called glycoprotein. This has profound cryo-protective ability, allowing for moisture retention even in sub-zero temperatures.
What Can It Do for My Skin?
PFE is a natural, bioactive ingredient that is safe and compatible with our body, even when pregnant or nursing. This makes PFE a powerful ally in organic skin care.
Thanks to its excellent water-binding properties, PFE retains moisture and water, even in freezing conditions – great news if you live in a country with a cold climate. It effectively seals in moisture to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized, protecting it from dryness and redness. This offers your skin a soft, smooth and healthy look.
It also promotes tissue regeneration by stimulating protein synthesis. This strengthens the skin, protecting it from breakage and enabling faster healing by supplying necessary nutrients needed for recuperation. It delivers a soothing effect and reinforces the skin’s natural protective barrier.
PFE is clinically proven to increase collagen and elastin production. Collagen and elastin are what help the skin maintain its elasticity. PFE is a powerful anti-aging agent, restructuring skin and reducing puffiness, wrinkles and fine lines. The result is firmer, more supple skin with a visibly youthful appearance.
Younger skin or skin prone to acne can also benefit from PFE, as it hinders the production of sebum. Sebum is the oily substance produced by our body’s sebaceous glands. As excess sebum can lead to breakouts, PFE can prevent the formation of acne and regulate oily skin, shininess and pore visibility.
