THE SCIENCE BEHIND CHITOSAN

born from the sea

ChitoCare beauty was born out of a respect for nature. Our parent company, Primex Iceland, is a marine biotechnology innovator and global leader in the sustainable production of pure, high-quality chitosan products.

Over 20 years of experience in the field of chitosan production and years of extensive research and development led to the creation of ChitoCare beauty: the first skincare brand globally to incorporate high-quality chitosan into its products.

With proven properties of healing, moisture control and film-forming, ChitoCare beauty products promote optimal skin health, offering superior hydration, skin protection, antioxidant protection, and powerful skin repair.

Harnessing the power of chitosan

A deep understanding of the unique qualities of the chitosan biopolymer has allowed us to develop a skincare line that is backed by years of research, cutting-edge biotechnology and a commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Through purification and a process called deacetylation, high-quality, pure chitosan is manufactured, that is certified as natural. By utilising the full potential of chitosan, we are proud to offer our customers high-quality products with proven efficacy that contribute to healthier skin and a more sustainable world.

A natural, biocompatible ingredient

We believe that everyone deserves healthy, naturally beautiful skin so we have developed all ChitoCare products to be suitable for use by all skin types, including people with sensitive skin or skin prone to skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis or rosacea.

As it consists of amino sugars that are naturally occurring in the human body, chitosan is biocompatible, biodegradable and with low toxicity. It has film-forming properties, allowing it to adhere to the surface of the skin, covering it in a thin, breathable film that helps to lock in moisture while keeping out external aggressors, supporting the skin's natural repair process.

Sustainable sourcing and production of chitosan

Chitosan is extracted from chitin, the second-most abundant natural polymer in the world after cellulose. Chitin is also the most abundant naturally occurring polysaccharide that contains amino sugars. This abundance, combined with the specific chemistry of chitin and its derivative chitosan, make for an impressive array of applications, including skincare and wound healing.

ChitoCare sources its chitosan from the discarded exterior shells of the Pandalus borealis cold-water shrimp, which are a by-product of the Icelandic fishing industry. This upcycling of leftover materials helps to reduce waste, leaving a smaller environmental footprint. Furthermore, all our operations in Iceland are carried out with the use of renewable energy sources, including geothermal energy for electricity production and local aquifers for water sourcing.

The utilisation of marine stocks around Iceland is strictly regulated by the government to ensure self-sustainable use of natural resources, contributing to a more balanced marine environment. Chitosan has also proven to be an excellent alternative to synthetic, eco-harmful chemicals, rendering it a promising ingredient for a greener future.
